NDA Annual Research Conferences

Ensuring the sustainability of the disability research effort in Ireland is a key goal of the NDA research unit. A Strategy For Equality: The Report of the Commission on People with Disabilities (1996) identified the poor dissemination of information on disability-related research in Ireland. More recently, Disability Related Research in Ireland 1996 - 2001, the NDA review of disability research, noted the lack of consistency and coordination within the field of disability research and the ineffective dissemination of results.

To ensure that disability research has the necessary impact on policy and practice, we require a body of disability research knowledge that is comprehensive and holistic, reflecting a range of disability perspectives, and we need a body of researchers and policy-makers familiar with that knowledge base. To facilitate the development of this knowledge base, and to improve the dissemination of research findings, the National Disability Authority hosts an annual disability research conference.

The NDA sees the conference as an opportunity to promote disability research in Ireland. The conference also provides an opportunity for members of the disability research community to meet collectively and acts as a forum for researchers to disseminate recent research findings and discuss issues affecting people with disabilities. The inaugural conference took place in December 2002.
