Office of the Revenue Commissioners – New Custom House
Voiceover: The Revenue Commissioners’ New Custom House is located in a modern three-storey over ground office building on Promenade Road in Dublin Port. 108 staff operate from the location in a range of Customs and Excise - and Outdoors – duties. The building is also used for conferences, seminars and meetings attended by staff located in the building, and from other locations.
Rory O’Connor - Principal Officer, Dublin Port: The access team within Revenue was assembled from all the different divisions and it was a very highly motivated group of people who became even more motivated as the project through accessibility went on and the local access team that we had here in the New Custom house, a lot of the inspiration from that central group rubbed off on them. The access teams goals here locally in the New Custom House were achieved mainly through raising the level of awareness of the staff that are here first of all that was the primary thing that was identified here, was that this had to be a full building effort, there was no point in just being a small group of people who were involved in this. We felt that we would have to have everybody in the New Custom House engaged in this from the very start and we achieved that and it made our job a lot easier as the project went on because everybody here was involved in it.
Shane Hogan - NDA: For the Revenue Commissioners New Custom House, we were particularly impressed with the training programmes that they put in place for staff which was developed in house and it was a very sharp, focused, to the point programme to give their staff the information that they need to service customers with disabilities. There was also quite a lot of work done to the building in terms of putting in automatic doors and improvements to the accessible bathrooms at reception to make sure that people with disabilities can get in and get out of the building easily.
Rory O’Connor - Principal Officer, Dublin Port: We will ensure that accessibility is maintained and improved into the future by ensuring that we constantly review the processes that we have here to allow accessibility into the building, any new thinking or any new developments that come on, we will consult with the NDA in relation to those and in relation to having this building upgraded accordingly. It is something that we regard as an organic process. Its not something that we have done and is now stopped. We will be moving on with this into the future and we will be taking all new thinking on board here.
